I enjoy giving public talks on the subjects that I write about. Over the years, I have given illustrated talks on a wide variety of subjects, including
- how ancient bison hunters in North America used everything from local geography, optical illusions, and their deep knowledge of animal behavior to drive large herds of animals over buffalo jumps
- how I became immersed in the fascinating world of human and animal mummies, and what I’ve learned from my travels with mummy researchers
- how I became a science writer, and what it’s like to venture out to remote field camps to report on archaeological discoveries
Testimonials for My Public Speaking:
“Your lecture, ‘What Mummies Have to Tell Us about Ourselves,’ had the rare quality of being both strongly scientific in content while remaining very accessible to our diverse audience through your engaging anecdotes, striking slides, and stories of real people…. Thank you once more, and I hope we have an opportunity to work together again in the future.” Caroline Angel, The Museum of Science in Boston
“On behalf of Smithsonian Associates I would like to extend our appreciation for your insightful lecture. The special talents and time given by persons such as yourself are what molds the high-quality reputation of the Smithsonian Institution.” Pamela Wejman, The Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C.
“While teaching journalism at the University of Victoria in the past, I often invited Heather to speak. She is a captivating speaker, hooking in and inspiring young students by sharing her rich and deep experience as a science journalist. To be honest, it was Heather who inspired me to become a science journalist.
And if that’s not enough, she’s witty and a lot of fun.”
